On lighting
Landscape lighting as a second design layer — path, step, and up-lighting that keeps the yard in use after dark.
The argument
Most yards go dark at sunset. A well-lit outdoor space doesn’t — it changes. The pool shifts color. The structure casts shadow. The planting beds that read as background by day become foreground by night.
Outdoor lighting isn’t accent work. Done right, it’s a second design layer that reveals the property differently. Path lighting for movement and safety. Step lighting where grade changes. Up-lighting on structure and specimen trees. The effect is controlled: never bright, never flat.
The lighting highlights the best parts of the property in ways you don’t see by day. It’s also what keeps the backyard in use after 8 PM — which, in a Wisconsin summer, is when the evening actually starts.
