On hardscape
Paver patios and decks built to live well for twenty years — a wider design range, and repairs without tearing out the slab.
The argument
Concrete slabs crack. They stain. A single tree root or frost heave and you’re looking at a repair that requires tearing out the whole section. Pavers handle all of it differently — individually, which means one paver can be lifted and reset without disturbing its neighbors.
Beyond the practical case, the design range is wider than most homeowners realize. Travertine, tumbled limestone, concrete paver in a dozen profiles, natural bluestone. Pattern and bond affect how the space reads from above, how it feels underfoot, how it scales to the house.
The patio is the foundation every other outdoor element sits on. Getting the scale right — generous borders, consistent coursing, no funny cuts at the edges — is what separates a patio that photographs well from one that lives well for twenty years.
